Effective Networking Strategies
Networking can be extremely challenging for many. Even without the many challenges that go into a networking specific event, social settings or gatherings can be intimidating in general. JobCommander understands
JobCommander believes there are a few strategies that those who wish to be better networkers should do.
1. Be Yourself
Authenticity and genuineness are often viewed as the best traits to have while presenting yourself in a networking setting. While at a networking event, everyone knows the game or the purpose of the event, to land job interviews, make quality connections, and hopefully lead to professional success. One major issue with many networking events is that some ‘pretend’ to be someone they are not in order to improve their favor with those they are trying to impress. Many people can see through this lack of authenticity. Be yourself and be respectful of potential new encounters.
2. Be Prepared
Have a game plan when you attend a networking event. Know WHY you are going there. If you are going to a networking event to simply get business cards, be sure to ask for them at the end of a conversation. If you are looking for an industry specific job, when you meet someone who you believe could help you, be sure to tell them what you are looking for AND ask for help. If you are trying to simply meet new people, be sure to have a plan in how you will approach as many people as you can.
3. Never Disregard Anyone
Possibly one of the biggest mistakes a novice networker can do is blatantly ignore someone who may not appear as someone who could assist you. You never know who is in the crowd and you never know who your biggest advocate might be. Be sure to show everyone the utmost respect and courtesy while at a networking event.
4. Follow Up with Your Conversations
If you are fortunate enough to get a business card, email, or phone number, be sure to follow up with your new acquaintance. It is best to not pester your possible new relationship but be sure to try to stay in their minds. Don’t forget to mention key or memorable parts of the conversation or follow up with questions from the conversation. Remember, you are most likely not the only one who they spoke to. Be sure to stand out from the crowd.
5. Networking takes time. Be Patient
Although you may want networking to work instantly, building relationships and trust with people takes time. Staying patient, but consistent, in your networking strategies can lead you to success in the long run. You may receive many rejections but staying positive and persistent will also allow you better chances of success.
Networking is one of the most critical pieces of one’s overall success in a job search. Networking can help advance your career or give you access to the best job opportunities that you otherwise may not have had. Exchanging information, business cards, advice, or support in these networking events will help you develop into a consummate professional.
Final piece of advice is that don’t think that you are the only one at a networking event looking for help. You may also lend a helping hand to others who may need it. Networking is a powerful tool that can be a two-way street.
