The Importance of Thank You Notes
Congratulations! You’ve had a great conversation with your interviewer, you think you’ve nailed the interview and you think you are on your way to a new job offer. But did you write a thank you note to your interviewer or interviewers? A vast majority of hiring managers believe that receiving a thank you note after conducting an interview has influenced their decision making when it comes to their hiring process. Even if you did not do well in the interview, a simple thank you note to your interviewer might help them remember you for the next time a job opening comes up.
Not all thank you letters, emails, or notes are the same. There are some important topics to address when writing a thank you to an interviewer. In every thank you note that you send, you should do a few things:
1) Start with a greeting and specifically name who you are thanking. Unless otherwise told to, you should always greet the addressee formally (i.e., Mrs., Miss, Mr., Dr., etc.)
2) Jump right into your letter, email or note by thanking your interviewer directly. Don’t waste too much time in an opening or introduction. Thank them right away.
3) This may be the most important part of the thank you letter and how to be remembered. You should ALWAYS mention at least one intimate detail about the interview, interviewer, or conversation. Specifically mentioning a topic, talking point, or fun fact about your interviewer will help them better remember who you are and the conversation they had with you.
4) This may only be applicable for some interviews but be sure to follow up with any questions that were discussed during the interview. If you had an interviewer who asked you a question and you were unsure of the answer, it is better to showcase that you came back to them with an answer rather than disregard that point during the interview process. If you also have additional questions or would like more clarity on the position, company, or potential co-workers, now is the right time to ask those as well.
5) Restate your ‘thank you’ and how you look forward to seeing or speaking with the addressee soon.
6) End with a kind closing or best regards.
